The stunning setting for this farmhouse led to the planners treating it as a non-designated heritage asset, and our challenge was to provide a design response which recognised these sensitivities yet created the gravitas and comfort sought by its owners.

A former barn, attached to the farmhouse and already in domestic use, has been replaced and enlarged to provide a new principal living room with master bedroom above. The barn’s language allowed us to create large openings onto exceptional views, and a belvedere terrace opens the living space out over the valley. New circulation routes connect with the existing hallway and improve the flow of the house, extending out to form a loggia set alongside the existing swimming pool. Two further bedrooms were renovated and enlarged, a new family bathroom and utility room introduced, and the existing roof replaced and insulated to create a home which is cosy, light and beautiful.
