A contemporary reimagining of a classic Georgian home
A harmonious extension of a Cotswold home to create a light-filled kitchen that allows daily life to flow onto the south-facing patio. Reinstatement of the grand open stairwell and alterations to the original rooms have transformed this home and enhanced its classic Georgian features.
“We liked the idea of a combination of contemporary and period architecture and I think that’s worked really well. The architects at Austin Design Works sat down with us and helped us to organise the existing space. I shared some magazine photos indicating what contemporary design ideas I liked and they sat with me and started sketching out ideas. That was really helpful because I needed to have a sense of what they were thinking and I appreciated the early involvement. The team also produced a model which brought their ideas to life and showed how interested they were in our project.
It was this collaborative approach that really mattered to us. I have a pretty strong opinion about what I like, but it felt very much like we were working together. Austin Design Works also had a bank of very good craftspeople - the stonemason, the roofer and the builders with whom they had long-standing relationships. I was concerned about going over budget and this was quite a big spend for us. But it was on time and budget!”
