A bright kitchen for a former Quaker meeting house

This Grade II listed former Quaker meeting house had been our clients’ family home for over 30 years, but they longed for a bigger kitchen.

Externally, the new extension is a modern nod to the cottage’s charming red brick chimneys. New zinc cladding replaces the worn timber, brightening the elevation and better insulating it. Two walls of openable glazing allow the kitchen and courtyard to merge as one generous space.

In contrast to the quirky, tactile exterior, the interior is simple, clean, and most importantly bright, with an unexpected luxury embedded in the floor- a glass-topped spiral wine cellar takes centre stage in the space.

“We spend our waking hours in the extension and conservatory. They catch the light and give us great views”
